This coffee table has been made from a piece of white scribbly gum cut from a felled tree just outside Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
The piece of timber was very rough cut, showing lots of chain saw marks, and needing a lot of sanding to get it smooth (timber from a gum tree is very hard and consequently it takes a lot of hard work and elbow grease to work with it ). A few months after it was cut a full thickness split appeared in the timber so I widened the split with a saw into a 'wedge' shape and filled it with pink flowering gum flowers I had dried the previous year. Flowering gum flowers dry beautifully in silica gel and retain their beautiful shape and colour. They are set in clear resin the wedge shape.
The timber was also not cut straight so required the assistance of a woodworker friend with a sled router to even it up (by over 1cm). You can see along the sides of the piece I have retained the beautiful marks left by insects, I sanded the sides back a bit but left most of this beautiful artwork! The whole piece has then been sealed in three layers of crystal clear resin.
45cm magenta hairpin legs are attached to the base. The legs are easily removed for shipping and would just need to be re-attached to the pre-drilled holes in the base using a phillips head screwdriver.
