Beautiful glass block featuring my sister Sue's geological thin section images. The images shown depict two different thin section photos - the first is a magnified view (under crossed polars) of radiating blades of epidote set in a coarse groundmass of quartz (Photo 11 in the list below); and the second is a magnified view (under plain polarised light) of pyroxene crystals being altered by feldspar laths (Photo 10 in the list below).
The thick glass frame is a heavy solid piece which perfectly highlights the stunning mineral art Sue captured during her career as a geologist. Comes complete with a card describing the mineral and the process Sue used to create the thin section and capture the image.
All of Sue's Australian Mineral Series photos are available in this format. Just select the photograph number from the numbered image (last pic). Below is a brief description of each of the images:
Photo 1 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under crossed polars) of pyroxene crystals being altered by feldspar laths.
Photo 2 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under crossed polars) of radiating epidote blades set in a fine-grained quartz groundmass.
Photo 3 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under crossed polars) of radiating epidote blades, set within quartz.
Photo 4 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under crossed polars) of feldspar.
Photo 5 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under crossed polars) of twinned pryoxene and feldspar.
Photo 6 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under crossed polars) of twinned feldspar (plagioclase) and blocky biotite showing birds-eye extinction.
Photo 7 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under crossed polars) of an agglomeration of pyroxene crystals.
Photo 8 - This photograph depicts a magnified view (under plain polarising light) of garnet crystals set in pyroxene and quartz.
